X-ray binary is a class of binary stars.(binary star is a star system consisting of two star orbiting around common barycenter). The x-rays are produced by matter falling from one component, called the donor(usually a normal star), to the other component, called the accretor, which is very compact: a neutrino star or black hole.

1. Low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs)
In this type X-ray binary a black hole or a neutron star will be star system in one component and in other component fills its Roche Iobe. It is less massive than the other compact object.
Approximately 200 LMXbS have been detected in the milky way.
It emits radiation in X-ray and typically less than 1% in visible light.

2. Intermediate-mass x-ray binaries ( IMXBs)
In this type X-ray binary one of the component is a black hole or a neutron star and other is an intermediate-mass star.

 

3. High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs)
In this type X-ray binary one of the component is a black hole or a neutron star and other component is a normal stellar component.
These X-ray binary is very luminous. So they easily detected.
Ex- 1. Cygnus X-1 which was the first identified black hole Candidate.
